Will Starke knows his national-golf profile doesn’t stack up to the others on the leaderboard of the 64th U.S. Junior Amateur.
That has been by design.
Starke, who shot another under-par round Tuesday – a 1-under 71 – projects to be the No. 2 seed for match play Wednesday. He is at 5-under 139 for the tournament -and still flying under the radar.
“I don’t have problem with it,” Starke said. “I just haven’t played in anything big. If I did, I’d be all right.”
Starke is from Chapin. S.C., which is 45 miles from Columbia where he will be playing his college golf – at the University of South Carolina.
He has mainly played in tournaments in his home state, or right outside it.
His biggest victory was the in-state Southern Cross Championships where he held off Cody Proveaux, his good friend who is also in this week’s field.
Starke wanted his older brother to caddie for him this week, but a work arrangement squashed the idea. For the time being, the teenager will carry his own bag for match play, with his mother rooting in the gallery.
