This week: The 111th U.S. Open, Thursday through Sunday, Congressional Country Club, Bethesda, Md.
Moore’s first-round score: 2-over-par 73.
Putnam’s first-round-score: 3-over 74.
Gonzales’ first-round score: 8-over 79.
Position: Moore is tied for 45th, Putnam is in a pack in 62nd and Gonzales is tied for 145th – all trailing Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (65).
Recap: Not a lot of birdies to go around for the South Sound trio. Moore made none, but rolled in par-saving putts of 35 feet on the 18th hole, and 25 feet on the eighth hole to help offset shoddy ball-striking. … Putnam was the most consistent of the three, and managed the lone birdie at the 17th hole (20-foot putt), but he was 3-over on the par-5s, including a double bogey at the 16th hole. … Gonzales made eight bogeys, including three in a row on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to make the turn in 40.
Moore quotable: “You know, I am not controlling my golf ball as well as I’d like to right now. I really don’t have a choice, and I guess I kind of know that, and have that mindset going into the day.”
Putnam quotable: “I played really good golf. The greens were really chewed up by the end of the day. Whether it helped or hurt my putting, I don’t know. … But I definitely played better than my score.”
Gonzales quotable: “I was planning on (posting a good score) pretty much all day, but I didn’t hit something even remotely close in order to make a birdie.”
Tee times Friday: Gonzales at 4 a.m. PDT off the first tee; Putnam at 7:11 a.m. PDT off the first tee; and Moore at 5:28 a.m. PDT off the first tee.
