This week: PGA Tour’s HP Byron Nelson Championship, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Four Seasons Resort, Irving, Texas.
Putnam’s first-round score: 3-under-par 67.
Stanley’s first-round score: Even-par 70.
Gonzales’ first-round score: 3-over 73.
Position: Putnam is tied for 12th, Stanley is in pack in 55th and Gonzales is tied for 117th – all trailing leader Jeff Overton (64).
Recap: Most elite golfers will say a tell-tale sign in the state of their game – or round – is how they played the par-3 holes. And on Thursday, Putnam birdied three of them (No. 5, 13 and 17). Of course it helps to roll in putts of 15 feet or longer on all them like the Life Christian graduate did, capped by a 20-footer on the 17th hole in what was easily his best opening round of the season – and only second in the 60s in 14 tournaments. … Stanley’s final two birdies were on putts of 10 feet or shorter, including a 7-footer on his final hole – the ninth hole. … Gonzales was running inside the top 100 until he hooked his drive into an 18th-hole water hazard, and made the final of five bogeys.
Tee times Friday: Gonzales at 6:50 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee; Stanley at 11:45 a.m. PDT off the first tee; and Putnam at 11:54 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee.
