Tacoma’s Derek Barron picked a great time to record his first hole-in-one, and it helped leave him with a six-stroke lead after the first day of the Puget Sound Amateur at Lake Spanaway Golf Course.

Barron, the defending champion, fired a 4-under-par 67, and leads Gig Harbor’s Britten Barker and Sammamish’s Erik Hanson (73).

Barron hit a 6-iron on the 195-yard, par-3 third hole for an ace. Two holes later, he eagled the par-5 fifth to get off and running, looking to become the first repeat champion since Kyle Stanley (2005).

“I struck the ball well,” Baron said. “And my pace on the greens was good.”

Steve Johnson shot a 74, and leads the senior division by one stroke.
