Allenmore bids farewell to Mojean after 42 years

The retirement party was held indoors Sunday at Dawson’s Tavern along South Tacoma Way, but the setting was not so dark that the red glow of Don Mojean could be hidden.

Mojean looked like a man who had spent more than four decades in the golf business on a course – outside.

Except now, Mojean, 61, has been months away from Allenmore Golf Course, the place where he had been a stalwart in the pro shop for much of his 42 years of service.

Instead, these days amid the rare appearance of sunshine, he had been spending his time away as a volunteer coach for the Stadium High fastpitch team.

But on Sunday, 50 to 60 friends, past and present-day club members and family gathered to salute the congenial man who was retiring from golf.

Another eagle lands Barron repeat Puget Sound Am title

Length has its advantages, and in Derek Barron’s case, it helped settle down an early bumpy ride in the final round of the Puget Sound Amateur at Lake Spanaway Golf Course.

Barron, of Tacoma, eagled the par-5 ninth hole en route to a final-round 2-over-par 73 to repeat as champion by eight strokes.

His 2-under 140 total beat Erik Hanson (74) by eight strokes.

“That (eagle) helped settle me down,” Barron said.

On that hole, Barron’s 4-iron approach from 220 yards landed pin high, and he rolled in a 20-foot putt for eagle.

Barron was the first champions to defend

Kyle Stanley at The Colonial, 4th Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, Thursday through Sunday, Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas.

Stanley’s fourth-round score: 1-over-par 71.

Position: Stanley (even-par 280) finished tied for 52nd, 16 strokes behind winner David Toms.

Recap: Another day of swirling Texas wind made Colonial CC a beast of a challenge. And after making birdie on his first three holes, Stanley made two bad swings – the tee shot at the fifth hole (out of bounds right) and the approach at the ninth (in the pond in front of the green), leading to a pair of double bogeys. He
