This week: WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Wednesday through Sunday, Ritz-Carlton Golf Course at Dove Mountain, Marana, Ariz.
First-round match: The 12th-seeded Moore defeated No. 5 Francesco Molinari, 3 and 1, in the Bobby Jones bracket.
Recap: Moore took firm control of this match by winning three holes in a row – Nos. 7-9 – in earning his first victory at this event. And the Cascade Christian product showed some imaginative shot-making out of trouble to get it going. On the seventh hole, his drive landed underneath shrubbery in the desert, but he found room to get a full 8-iron on it from 155 yards, and the ball stopped 12 feet from the hole. His par won the hole. On the eighth, a par 5, Moore canned an 11-foot putt for birdie; Molinari missed his from 8 feet to tie. And on the ninth, Moore’s 7-iron approach from 220 yards out landed close behind the hole, and another par gave him a 4-up lead at the turn. Molinari did not make his first birdie until the 12th hole – way too late.
Next: Moore will play No. 13 seed K.J. Choi, of South Korea, in today’s round of 32.
