This week: PGA Tour’s Bob Hope Classic, Wednesday through Sunday, PGA West Nicklaus, PGA West Palmer, La Quinta CC and Silver Rock Golf Courses, La Quinta, Calif.

Stanley’s third-round score: 4-under-par 68 at PGA West Palmer.

Putnam’s third-round score: 1-under 71 at La Quinta CC.

Position: Stanley (12-under 204) is tied for 18th, and Putnam (8-under 208) is tied for 57th – all trailing co-leaders Jhonattan Vegas and Gary Woodland (198).

Recap: What Stanley will likely be long-regarded for his is ball-striking – and that was what was on display in the final holes of his third round. He had a four-birdie-in-five-hole-stretch, with all four birdies putts coming from 11 feet and in. The highlight was his near-ace with a 6-iron on the par-3 12th. … Putnam was near the top 20 after an eagle-birdie stretch (5-iron approach to 4 feet on the par-5 for eagle on No. 5) to get him to 4-under after 14 holes. But he then recorded a double bogey (hit tee shot in water on par-3 eighth) and a bogey late.

Tee times Saturday: Stanley at 10:09 a.m. PT off the 10th tee at PGA West Nicklaus; and Putnam at 10:09 a.m. PT off the first tee at Silver Rock.
