A couple of local club professional standouts – Tacoma’s Chris Griffin and Sumner’s Brian Thornton – took care of their matches in convincing style during the opening day of the 62nd Hudson Cup at Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent.
Griffin teamed with Seattle’s Ryan Benzel to win a morning foursome match over amateurs Paul Peterson and Armen Kirakossian, 2-and-1.
Thornton and Blaine’s Jeff Coston won by that same margin over Derek Berg and Chad Sawyer in that same session.
And in the afternoon four-ball, Griffin and Thornton had the easiest verdict – 5-and-4 – over Berg and Dan Whitaker.
The professionals lead 71/2 to 21/2 over the top amateurs in the region heading into today’s singles’ action.
One amateur who fared well was reigning Tacoma City Amateur champion Sean Packer, of Bonney Lake. Packer and Scott Larsen defeated Jerry Johnson and Derek Franklin, 1-up in the four-ball session.
