Long wait over, Putnam stamps return to PGA Tour

Welcome to your first pro win, Michael Putnam – and a trip back to the PGA Tour in 2011.

An hour-long flurry of post-tournament activities came and went, and Lakewood’s Michael Putnam still had the clear state of mind to mention one of the cool things to happen Sunday.

“Seahawks won,” he said with a hint of disbelief and excitement.

And so did Putnam – finally.

Anybody who’s ever met, or been around the 27-year-old, who prepped at Life Christian Academy, and played his college golf at Pepperdine, you certainly walk away impressed how real a person he is.

In other words, time to root – root for him.

Ryan Moore at BMW Championship, 4th Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s BMW Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, Lemont, Ill.

Fourth-round score: 2-over-par 73.

Position: Moore (6-under 278) tied for third, two strokes behind winner Dustin Johnson (276).

Recap: The Puyallup golfer did not get the win, but he still accomplished something big-time – he earned a spot at The Tour Championship in two weeks, reserved for the top 30 players remaining in the playoffs (he goes in as the No. 26 seed), and guaranteeing him a spot in all four majors in 2011. Moore started Sunday with 10 consecutive pars before his

Ryan Moore at BMW Championship, 3rd Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s BMW Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, Lemont, Ill.

Third-round score: 5-under-par 66.

Position: Moore (8-under 205) leads after three rounds, one stroke ahead of Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar and Charlie Wi.

Recap: The Puyallup product is in a position he hasn’t been in 2010 – leading late in a tournament. And after only making one birdie en route to his 3-over 74 on Friday, he made six of them Saturday – the last coming on the par-5 15th where he left his second shot in the fairway collar just short of

Ryan Moore at BMW Championship, 2nd Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s BMW Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, Lemont, Ill.

Second-round score: 3-over-par 74.

Position: Moore (3-under 139) is tied for ninth, three strokes behind leader Charlie Wi (136).

Recap: After the Puyallup golfer torched Cog Hill’s back nine for a record 7-under 29 on Thursday, the course bit back – not just at Moore, but the entire field. He had one birdie, and played that same stretch at 2-over Friday after opening with back-to-back bogeys. Then over the green on the par-4 sixth, it took two shots to get his ball on the

Ryan Moore at BMW Championship, 1st Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s BMW Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, Lemont, Ill.

First-round score: 6-under-par 65.

Position: Moore is tied for second, one stroke behind leader Matt Kuchar (64).

Recap: That is back-to-back tournaments in which the Puyallup product has started off with a spectacular round (shot season-low 64 at last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship). And it got rolling after three loose shots on the par-5 11th where he holed out from a front-greenside bunker for birdie, sparking a seven-birdies-in-eight-hole-stretch en route to a course-record 29 on Cog Hill’s back nine. “Just got a little

Ryan Moore at BMW Championship, preview

This week: PGA Tour’s BMW Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, Lemont, Ill.

World ranking: 49th.

2010 earnings: $1.81 million (35th on the PGA Tour).

Last tournament: The Puyallup golfer’s late-season swoon continued at last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship (2-over 286, tied for 67th). He’s missed two cuts, and finished no better than 65th in his past four tournaments. Now, it’s do-or-die, in terms of staying in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Dropping 11 spots last week to 58th, he needs a top-five finish this week – or better – to ensure his debut spot at The

Pepper on Chambers Bay: ‘Not quite ready for prime time’

Sports Illustrated got a hold of NBC on-site reporter Dottie Pepper and asked her observations about Chambers Bay Golf Links during the U.S. Amateur.

She was mildly critical of the course, as seen here.

I will say this, she did walk the course during broadcasts – unlike others who were working in similar capacity.

Ryan Moore at Deutsche Bank Championship, 4th Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s Deutsche Bank Championship, Friday through Monday, TPC Boston, Norton, Mass.

Fourth-round score: 5-over-par 76.

Position: Moore (2-over 286) finished tied for 67th, 24 strokes behind winner Charley Hoffman (262), who shot 62 on Monday.

Recap: At one point, the Puyallup golfer shared the lead in this tournament, but never came close to being as sharp as he was Friday – when he opened with a 64. In the three rounds after that, Moore made seven birdies the rest of the way – and 13 bogeys or worse. He had three double bogeys Monday.

Next: The BMW
