Jeff Wilson, a 47-year-old from Fairfield, Calif., set a course record and pulled way ahead of the field by shooting 10-under-par 62 Monday evening at the Home Course.

Wilson eagled the final two holes – Holes 8 and 9 – to take a six-stroke lead entering the second day of qualifying. Today he moves to Chambers Bay where he appears to be a lock to advance to the 64-player match play bracket.

“It’s like insurance,” said Wilson, who shot a 33 on the back nine before firing a 29 on the front nine.

Wilson was at a loss to explain his round, saying that “he started doing crazy stuff.”

He rolled in an 8-foot putt for Eagle on the par-5 eighth. The holed a 131-yard with a wedge on the par-4 ninth.

“I was in disbelief,” Wilson said.

Wilson, who works at a car dealership owned by his family, has been here before. He was the medalist in qualifying at the 2000 U.S. Amateur.

He broke the course record of 64 set by Carl Jonson of Bainbridge Island. Jonson shot a 74 Monday at the Home Course.
