Tacoma man a finalist for U.S. Open Challenge

Wayne Gretzky … Drew Brees … Mark Wahlberg … and Kenny Evans.

This could be the foursome for the nationally-televised 2010 Golf Digest/U.S. Open Challenge at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Who is Evans, you ask? He’s a 1983 Clover Park High School graduate who just moved back into the area in January after taking job in the finance department at Verizon Wireless.

And the position he’s in would make any avid golfer jealous. He is one of five finalists to be cast in the national competition to play a round of golf with three celebrities on a course set up under U.S. Open conditions.

To win, Evans would need to receive the most online votes (www.gdopencontest.com) from today until April 30. The public can cast one vote daily – per E-mail address.

Ryan Moore at Arnold Palmer Invitational, 4th Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Thursday through Sunday, Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, Fla.

Fourth-round score: 1-over-par 73.

Position: Moore is in a tie for 40th, and was one of the golfers who finished in a rain-interrupted final round. Ernie Els leads at 11-under. Action will start at 7 a.m. Monday PDT.

Recap: The Cascade Christian graduate didn’t post an under-par round at Bay Hill, and made birdies Sunday on two par-5 holes to go along with three bogeys (Nos. 5, 10 and 18).

Next: Moore will take this week off, then play at the Masters starting

Ryan Moore at Arnold Palmer Invitational, 3rd Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Thursday through Sunday, Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, Fla.

Third-round score: 2-over-par 74.

Position: Moore (2-over 218) is tied for 59th, 12 strokes behind leader Ernie Els (206).

Recap: Momentum can be easily offset by one bad swing, and that is what happened to the Puyallup golfer on Saturday. He had survived two early bogeys with birdies at No. 6 and 8, and made the turn with a little juice in the tank. Then on the par-4 10th – one of Bay Hill’s easier holes – one of the PGA Tour’s leaders in

Ryan Moore at Arnold Palmer Invitational, 2nd Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Thursday through Sunday, Bay Hill Club and Resort, Orlando, Fla.

Second-round score: Even-par 72.

Position: Moore (even-par 144) is tied for 44th, seven strokes behind co-leaders Ben Curtis, Ernie Els, Davis Love III and D.J. Trahan (137).

Recap: The Puyallup product isn’t finding a whole lot of birdies on the “Florida “Swing,” averaging 2.8 birdies per round – well below his 4.5 average everywhere else this season. In fact, Moore was in danger of missing the cut at 1-over before he got up-and-down from a greenside bunker behind the par-5 16th green for

Ryan Moore at Arnold Palmer Invitational, 1st Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Thursday through Sunday, Bay Hill Club and Resort, Orlando, Fla.

First-round score: Even-par 72.

Position: Moore is tied for 48th, six strokes behind co-leaders J.B. Holmes and Davis Love III (66).

Recap: For much of the round, the Puyallup product was under-par – reaching 2-under after he his a 60-yard wedge shot close, and sank a 21/2-foot putt on the par-4 sixth. But like last week, he ran into a one-hole blowup – this time on the difficult eighth hole where he hit his approach shot into a greenside pond, and made a

This week: PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Thursday through Sunday, Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, Fla.

World ranking: 56th.

2010 earnings: $477,199 (44th on the PGA Tour).

Last tournament: The Cascade Christian and UNLV product finished tied for 80th (5-over-par 218) and did not make the final-round cut at last week’s Transitions Championship. Still he’s off to the best start of his career with six made cuts in seven tournaments. And this week, since Palmer is one of his idols, he’s playing in an event meaningful to him – and for the first time since his rookie season in

Allenmore gets innovative finding lucky amateur

As previously discussed, the Washington Open Invitational in May will be changed to a professional-amateur format.

The pro can win the championship title.

The amateur can help capture a team crown.

So, the folks in the Allenmore Golf Course pro shop – head pro Don Mojean, in particular – have gotten creative in finding the amateur partner for assistant pro Taylor Ferris for next month’s Washington Open.

The course is holding a qualifying tournament.

Since the amateur entry fee for the Washington Open is nearly $900, the net winner of the qualifying tournament April 10-11 will have his costs paid

Ryan Moore at Transitions Championship, 3rd Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s Transitions Championship, Thursday through Sunday, Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course, Tampa Bay, Fla.

Third-round score: 3-over-par 74.

Position: Moore (5-over 218) finished tied for 80th, and missed the third-round cut (finished inside the top 70). Jim Furyk is the leader at 203.

Recap: This course presents so much danger, big numbers are commonplace. And for the second consecutive round, the Puyallup golfer registered a triple bogey – this time on Copperhead’s most difficult par-3 (235 yards, No. 8). He hit his tee shot so far left, he had to take a penalty stroke, then played pinball out
