Kyle Stanley at Mayakoba Classic, 1st Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s Mayakoba Classic, Thursday through Sunday, El Camaleon Golf Club, Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico

First-round score: 1-under-par 70.

Position: Stanley is tied for 47th, six strokes behind leader Joe Durant (64).

Recap: The back nine was an adventure, to say the least, for the Gig Harbor resident. He had one par – on the 13th hole – but sat at 4-under after making birdie on one of the course’s most difficult holes, the 521-yard, par-4 16th. But Stanley found a limestone canal on the next hole, and made a double bogey, and had another bogey

Ryan Moore at WGC-Accenture Match Play, 1st Rd.

This week: WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Wednesday through Sunday, Dove Mountain Golf Club, Marana, Ariz.

First-round match: Lost to Ernie Els, 4-and-3.

Recap: In this format, anything can happen – confirmed by the fact that 10 seeds ranked No. 10 or lower upset their opponents Wednesday. Moore, a No. 13 seed in the Player Bracket, was not one of them, and it wasn’t difficult to see why: He made only three birdies in 15 holes. His only win came with a birdie on the par-4 fourth against the fourth-seeded Els, who was 3-up at the turn, and really put the

Ryan Moore at WGC-Accenture Match Play, preview

This week: PGA Tour’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Wednesday through Sunday, Dove Mountain Golf Club, Marana, Ariz.

World ranking: 51st.

2010 earnings: $335,173 (27th on the PGA Tour).

Last tournament: The Puyallup golfer tied for 76th at the Northern Trust Open (6-over 219) two weeks ago, but missed the final-day round (it’s not officially declared a missed cut by the PGA Tour). Now Moore gets to play in one of his favorite formats – match play. And he gets one of the sport’s top competitors in the first round in South Africa’s Ernie Els. How up-in-the-air is this match between

Match play? Right up Moore’s fairway

Not since Ryan Moore struck that golden 8-iron at the finishing hole of Winged Foot Golf Club in 2004 against Luke List to sew up the U.S. Amateur has he gone “mano a mano” against a world-class golfer in match play.

The Puyallup product’s return Wednesday will feature perhaps the most intriguing matchup of the first round in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships outside Tucson, Ariz.

Moore, in his first world match-play event and the No. 13 seed of the Player bracket, takes on South Africa’s Ernie Els, who is a seven-time match play champion worldwide.

A steak, and a huge 75th birthday revelation for Still

Fircrest’s Ken Still turned 75 on Friday.

And he celebrated with the golf-equivalent gift of going to Disneyland.

The longtime Pierce County product met with his wife, Linda and son, Mark at El Gauchos in downtown for dinner Thursday night.

When they placed a Masters visor on the table, and asked him to guess what his present was, he began scratching his head.

“I had no idea,” Still said.

As the story goes, Linda phoned Barbara Nicklaus months eariler in search of an idea. Barbara consulted her husband – Jack Nicklaus – about it, and “the Golden Bear” simply suggested

Kyle Stanley at Pebble Beach Pro-Am, 3rd Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Thursday through Sunday, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula CC, Pebble Beach, Calif.

Third-round score: 2-under-par 70 at Spyglass Hill.

Position: Stanley (2-under 212) missed the cut by two strokes. Dustin Johnson and Paul Goydos are co-leaders at 196.

Recap: When the wind is down, and the conditions are ideal, the demand to make birdies is high. Simply, the Gig Harbor resident didn’t make enough of them in three rounds (nine). And it came down to his putting (31.3 putts per round), which has been up-and-down, at best,

Kyle Stanley at Pebble Beach Pro-Am, 2nd Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Thursday through Sunday, Pebble Beach Links, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula CC, Pebble Beach, Calif.

Second-round score: 1-over-par-71 at Monterey Peninsula.

Position: Stanley (even-par 142) is tied for 99th, 10 strokes behind six co-leaders.

Recap: Monterey Peninsula features five par-3 holes with considerable length and challenge, and the Gig Harbor resident tangled with the 223-yard ninth to finish off his round, leading to his second double bogey in as many days. He didn’t take advantage of hitting 12 of 13 fairways.

Tee time Saturday: 8:33 a.m. PST off Spyglass Hill’s first

Kyle Stanley at Pebble Beach Pro-Am, 1st Rd.

This week: PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Thursday through Sunday, Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula CC, Pebble Beach, Calif.

First-round score: 1-under-par 71 at Pebble Beach.

Position: Stanley is tied for 71st, seven strokes behind Dustin Johnson (64 at Pebble Beach).

Recap: You never expect the long-hitting Gig Harbor product to double bogey a par-5 hole, but he did Thursday. He found difficulty in two greenside bunkers on the second hole, and was immediately 2-over. But Stanley rebounded with two par-5 birdies later in the round, and finished it off by landing a sand-wedge approach from
