Sahalee Players Championship starts today

15th SAHALEE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

When: Today through Thursday, 54 holes of stroke play.

Where: Sahalee Country Club, Sammamish.

Golf course: 6,981 yards, par 72.

Defending champion: Daniel Summerhays, BYU (8-under-par 280).

Notes: This would have been the sixth year the
tournament was played for four rounds, but it was shortened because of
rain and the Fourth of July. … Summerhays is not defending his title.
He won a Nationwide Tour event the week after winning at Sahalee last
summer , and subsequently turned professional. … Another member of last
year’s final group – 2006 champion Kyle Stanley, of Gig Harbor – did
not return, opting to play the North-South Amateur at Pinehurst No. 2,
the site of the 2008 U.S. Amateur. … Duvall’s Derek Berg, a University
of Washington product, has three top-10 finishes at the Sahalee Players
since 2000, including losing in a playoff two years ago. … Three
in-state players have captured the championship (Pasco’s Ryan Lavoie in
2000, Puyallup’s Ryan Moore in 2004 and Stanley in 2006).
