Walk-through lets visitors get sneak peek of Spanaway’s Fantasy Lights

Usually you take in Fantasy Lights at Spanaway Park from the warmth of your car.

But not today.

Visitors can preview the 18th annual Fantasy Lights during a walking preview from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Sunday, Nov. 18). It starts in the parking lot at Sprinker Recreation Center, where crowds will gather and then walk to the Spanaway Park entrance. Sprinker Recreation Center is at 14824 S. C St.

Coffee, cocoa and snacks will be available for purchase, organizers said.

Oh tannenbaum, have I got a Christmas tree for you

The weather looks chilly but dry through this weekend, and it’s officially December, so it might be a good time to start decking your halls.

And if your idea of a Christmas tree is stored a box in the attic, I say: “Good Yule, sir!” You’ve made your choice and we have nothing left to discuss.

And if you’re thinking about picking up your tree from the Safeway parking lot, nothing wrong with that. But let’s see if I can convince you to venture out a little farther and revel in the Northwest tradition of bagging your own. We live in Christmas tree Nirvana, which you already know if you’ve lived anywhere else in the country, and it’s a shame not to take advantage of that.

New outdoor ice rinks in Tacoma and Puyallup join annual ones in Seattle and Bellevue

Ahh – there you go, gliding over fresh ice, wrapped up in scarf and hat, laughing with friends, sipping hot cocoa… It’s outdoor ice skating time – that’s outdoor ice rinks, of course, in the mild Pacific Northwest. But with two new rinks just opened in downtown Tacoma and Puyallup, along with favorites further north in Seattle and Bellevue, how to choose?
