Tour a historic Tacoma firehouse on Saturday

What could be funner than living in an old firehouse? You can pretend you’re a firefighter without having to get up at 3 a.m. to get cats out of trees.

On Saturday you can live the fantasy yourself. Historic Tacoma has arranged a tour of Historic Firehouse #8 in the Whitman Neighborhood from 4 to 6 p.m. The firehouse is at 4301 South L Street in Tacoma.

The tour is free to Historic Tacoma members. Non-Members pay $10 at the door.

Moms and more at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium this weekend

Moms get half-price admission to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium on Saturday, May 12. But that’s only one reason to head up to the park.

The weekend features the summer kickoff of a new Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater Show and Radio Disney will be on site Saturday.

Coming to the Tacoma Dome for Van Halen? Here’s your guide to downtown, including parking information

Van Halen will rock the Tacoma Dome on Saturday night, but anyone whose attended a concert at the Dome knows parking can be a challenge.

Concert-goers should consider parking away from the Dome, throughout downtown, and riding the Link light rail in.

Sound Transit said this morning that the Link will operate on extended hours Saturday for the concert. The last train will leave the Tacoma Dome Station at 11:48 p.m. instead of the usual 10 p.m.

Drop your landing gear at B-17 ground school

World War II may be long over but it’s not too late to be on a B-17 crew. The Museum of Flight at Boeing Field is offering a weekend “ground school” that will include a flight on a B-17 Flying Fortress.

The course on May 19 and 20 covers design, construction, operation and performance of the aircraft. Particpants will be able to climb inside the Museum’s Flying Fortress, led by their restoration team.

Puyallup’s Spring Fair starts on Thursday

Music-making and NASCAR are the themes of two new attractions at this weekend’s vernal version of the Puyallup Fair which swings open its gates at 2 p.m. Thursday.

While some of the action is happening only Friday through Sunday there are still plenty of reasons to head over on Thursday. First: admission is free all day to anyone 18 or younger. The Fair just asks that you bring a non-perishable food donation for the Puyallup Food Bank.

St. Martin’s to become Guy Fieri’s latest ‘dive’

The Duke of Diners and Dives, Guy Fieri, will headline Saint Martin’s University 2012 Gala benefiting student scholarship funds.

The annual black-tie affair will take place on Nov. 3, at Marcus Pavilion on the University’s Lacey campus. Fieri will make a gourmet dinner on-stage for guests. Wine and a live auction are also on the program. A separate ticketed afternoon event with Fieri will take place, similar to last year’s “Meet the Chef” affair with Mario Batali.

AC/DC powers up at EMP this month

The new Experience Music Project exhibit “AC/DC: Australia’s Family Jewels” kicks off April 27 with some headbangin’ events. The all-female AC/DC tribute band Hell’s Belles will perform and there will be a Q&A and book signing with author Anthony Bozza.

The EMP show about the long running and hard rocking Aussie band AC/DC runs April 28 to September 29. The group has sold 71 million albums in the U.S. and makes appearances in Tacoma every couple of years.

Elmo will be making music in Tacoma May 11-13

It’s monsters making music when Sesame Street Live brings “Elmo Makes Music” to Tacoma May 11-13. Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird and their “Sesame Street” friends will be in town along with a new feature: the Play Zone. Tickets are now on sale.

Sesame Street itself comes alive when The Play Zone opens one hour before the shows. It allows your young “Sesame Street” fan to sit in Big Bird’s nest, hang out in Oscar’s trash can and have other “Street” experiences.
