Go fly a kite at festival, admire roses at show, check out antique trucks and tractors, cycle the county and Taste of Taccoma all happening this weekend

Besides the Taste of Tacoma going on all weekend at Point Defiance Park here are other activities happening around the Sound.

Discover the beauty of the rose when Tacoma Rose Society puts on its annual Rose Show on Saturday. This year’s theme, “A Symphony of Roses, A Concord of Colors” will features dozens of varieties of roses on display. Judging is at 10 a.m., and the show is open to the public from noon-5:30 p.m. at Jackson Hall, 314 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Tacoma. Admission is free. Call 253-537-2564.

Cigars, cars…and booze

LeMay America’s Car Museum and El Gaucho Tacoma are teaming up to put on “Cars & Cigars” on August 3.

The event combines:
– Tastings from Northwest wineries, distilleries and breweries
– Cigars
– LeMay’s cars
– El Gaucho appetizers

Cigars can be purchased with the ticket or at the event.
Or you can bring cigars with you.

Hit the Thrift Shop: Macklemore to play KeyArena

It’s time to dust off your thrift shop treasures. The Seattle hip-hop duo of Macklemore and Lewis are returning to their hometown for a Dec. 12 show at KeyArena.

The concert will be the final stop on their fall arena tour. If you want to catch them earlier they’ll kick off the tour in Portland on Oct. 22 and play Spokane on Oct. 23.

The concert will feature special guests Talib Kweli and Big K.R.I.T.

Tickets will be available at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Highland games, fantasy festival, comedy, beer festival and more happenings this weekend

Explore the area’s Scottish heritage at the 44th annual Tacoma Highland Games at Frontier Park, 21800 Meridian Ave. E., Graham. Enjoy massed bagpipe bands, a British antique car show, a clan gathering, vendors, piping and drumming, Highland dance and field events competitions. The event runs from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Go viral at the Grand Cinema with ’12 Monkeys’

Before Brad Pitt was fighting infected zombies in “World War Z” he was battling his own disease-creating father in “12 Monkeys.”

Viruses are the topic of discussion and entertainment when the Grand Cinema and the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department collaborate for an evening of “Science on Screen” on June 27.

A talk about dangerous viral outbreaks by emerging diseases expert Dr. James Bales and disease outbreak control public health leader Nigel Turner will be followed by a screening of the 1995 Brad Pitt/Bruce Willis film “12 Monkeys.”

Drake to play Tacoma Dome Sept. 26

Grammy winner Drake will be playing the Tacoma Dome on September 26, part of his Would You Like A Tour?, it was announced today.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 21.

The Would You Like A Tour? tour (I know…awkward) kicks off the day before in Portland with special guest Miguel.

Summer Sounds at Skansie begins June 25

The free outdoor concert series at Gig Harbor’s Skansie Brothers Park starts again on June 25.

Summer Sounds at Skansie will run on consecutive Tuesdays through August 20. All concerts start at 6:30 p.m. at the waterfront park in downtown Gig Harbor.
