KIRO radio goes to the dogs (and cats)

Picture 1America’s love affair with their cats and dogs shows no sign of slowing and now KIRO Radio (97.3 FM) is catering to that demographic with a new show.

“It’s Raining Cats and Dogs,” hosted by Shawn Stewart, debuts Sunday at 1 p.m. The two-hour show will broadcast on Sundays in that time slot.

The show features pet experts from the Ahimsa Dog Training Center (owned by Stewart) who will take listener questions. The show will feature tips on training techniques, nutritional advice and “timely advice for keeping your pets happy.”

“I’ve never seen a city more in love and obsessed with their companions than Seattle,” said KIRO Radio’s Assistant Program Director Jason Antebi. Presumably he was including Tacoma and other Washington cities in that assessment. But then it’s too hard to say how many Ballard cat ladies skew the numbers.

The American Veterinary Medical Association announced this week that Washington ranks fifth for cat ownership with 39 percent of households in our state owning a cat. We didn’t even make the top 10 for dog ownership.

The state/district with the lowest cat and dog ownership? The OTHER Washington. I guess folks are too busy bickering in D.C. to bother with a pet.
