Normally, “fun run” is a complete oxymoron to me. But I might change my mind for the Black Cat fun run on Saturday, Oct. 27 along Point Defiance Park’s Five Mile Drive.
The Halloween-themed event features a glowing race course through the woods and a costume contest. A large tent will shelter finishers from the elements and provide snacks.
The run (and walk) begins at 6 p.m. Costumes are encouraged, especially anything that glows, reflects or lights up.
This is the one day when having a black cat cross your path is actually good luck.
Here’s more from the announcement:
Costumed volunteers wielding flashlights, glow sticks and lanterns will cheer on participants throughout the course and will help brighten the route. Low-level lighting such as glow sticks and votives will cast a glow at intervals along the road, always visible by runners and walkers. As additional security, the Tacoma Wheelman’s Bicycle Club will ride the course with the runners and walkers.
Two routes are available—5 miles or 2.5 miles. Both courses are out-and-back routes beginning and ending near the kiosk at the Point Defiance Park Pearl Street entrance and both are chip-timed. The 5-mile course turnaround is located at the Gig Harbor Picnic Shelter and includes a water station, restrooms, lights and music. The 2.5-mile course turnaround is located near the beginning of the outer loop of Five Mile Drive.
Finish line fun includes a party with live music, snacks, beverages, door prizes and costume contest under a large decorated tent!
Race volunteers are being recruited for a variety of duties including parking monitor, set-up, take-down, course monitor and registration table. Volunteers receive a free long-sleeve race t-shirt along with the gratitude of race organizers and participants! To volunteer visit MetroParksTacoma.org/Black-Cat/.
The entry fee for both distances is $25 through October 22, $35 October 23-26, $40 on the day of the event and includes a long-sleeve t-shirt and glow stick. Online registration is available at MetroParksTacoma.org/Black-Cat/ along with parking, road closure, maps and packet pickup details.
Sponsored by Metro Parks Tacoma and South Sound Running.
