‘Nightmare Next Door': Mauck tragedy to air Sunday on Investigation Discovery

It was one of the most horrific crimes to hit our area in recent years: the brutal slaying of Brian and Beverly Mauck by a man who had done time for killing his own mother.

The couple’s tragic story will air this Sunday on Investigation Discovery as part of its “Nightmare Next Door” series and features interviews with their families and the investigators involved.

The region was left shocked in 2007 when the newlyweds were found shot to death in their Graham home. Several leads sent police in wrong directions but it wasn’t until they started looking into the background of a helpful tipster did they learn he was the killer.

Daniel Tavares Jr. lived just a few doors down from the Maucks. He had been released early from prison in Massachusetts after stabbing his mother to death. Tavares’ father said he lived in fear of his son and slept with a gun under his pillow.

Tavares Jr. moved to Graham to pursue a relationship with a woman that had begun as pen pals. No one save her was aware of his background.

As Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said, “If you looked at him the wrong way, he’d probably kill you.”

It’s thought Tavares killed Brian over a petty debt and then Beverly to eliminate any witnesses.

The episode includes interviews with Karen Slater (Beverly Mauck’s mother), Det. Sgt. Ben Benson, Det. Jason Tate and Dep. James Wilson – all of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The weekly series asks, “How well do you know your neighbors?” as it examines homicide cases perpetrated by a seemingly innocent neighbor.
