UPDATE: Race organizers have now moved back the race registration deadline to Aug. 1.

Zombies seem to be everywhere these days – both in entertainment and in the news (don’t ask.) Now, they’re even showing up at fun runs.

Yes, you can get your exercise while running from a hoard of the shuffling brain-eaters in the zombie-Infested 5K, “Run For Your Lives.” It’s coming to Onalaska on August 4. (UPDATED) Race registration deadline is August 1.

“Run for Your Lives” will take participants through a series of obstacles over a 5K course while being chased by zombies. We presume the “zombies” are actors in makeup because zombies aren’t real…or are they?

Originally held outside Baltimore the event proved so popular it’s invading 12 cities this year. Not that you can call Onalaska a city. (Nothing personal, Onalaska – you’re quaint, cute and we love you.)

Last year’s race in Maryland had 10,000 participants and spectators. The race here will be held at Burntridge MX Park in Onalaska.

I certainly hope all of Onalaska’s fine citizens know about this event in advance. I suspect that area has 2.3 shotguns per household and I’d hate to see some actor get blasted by a diligent zombie killin’ Onalaskan.

In the race participants wear a flag football-like belt with three flags and must make it to the finish line without getting zombified. Zombies will “attack” runners (trying to remove the flags). Runners must complete the race with at least one flag.

If all the flags are taken the runner becomes a zombie. I’m not sure if a makeup crew is on hand or if you just start shuffling along. But I guess if you are a “fresh” zombie you’d still look good for a little while.

Survivors and newly-created zombies are invited to the Apocalypse Party following the event. It will feature live local entertainment, music, vendors, food, beverages and, yes, more zombies.

Here are the details:

Registration packages for participants include a race shirt, admission to the Apocalypse Party, a medal signifying your survival or zombie transformation, and advanced training for the zombie apocalypse. Spectator and camping packages are also available. Prizes will be given to the top male and female human finishers in several age brackets, including: 14-19; 20-29; 30-39; and 40 and up. There will also be an awards bracket for military participants. A portion of every ticket sold will be donated to the American Red Cross.
