Oliver and James Phelps, the identical twins who play the Weasley twins in the Harry Potter films, wowed a full house of fans today at Emerald City Comicon. Several young female fans could barely contain their excitement when they asked the young men questions.

I hosted the twins at their fan panel so I wasn’t able to make notes or take photos but here are the highlights:

- They look different. Not only from their characters but from each other. First, they have dark brown hair. James’ is long, Oliver’s is short. The guys said over the course of 10 years they became well versed in hair dye.

- This is their first trip to the Pacific Northwest and they love it. They want to return on a road trip, they said. They’ve had a chance to sneak out of their hotel room and walk around town, shooting photos. They said the climate here reminded them of home in England.

- After arriving in town they attended Friday’s Sounder game. And yes, they said, they rooted for the Sounders.

- Yes, they get asked dumb questions: “Are you related?” “When one of you stubs your toe does the other feel it?” “Are you telepathic?” “Which is the evil twin?” James pointed at Oliver at that last one.

- Future projects for the men will be a combination of working together and working on solo projects.

- If offered the same role they would talk it out or, Oliver said, play a round of golf to decide it.

- Oliver said the death scene in the final Potter film was very emotionally difficult for him. James jokingly said he just slept through it. In a response to a fan question about what was it like to discover he died in the book series James told an amusing tale. He was on a bullet train in Japan when he read the death scene. Soon, a ticket taker demanded his ticket and he was too flustered to find it. You don’t understand, he told the conductor, I just died.

- Do they ever or did they ever pull a twin switch? They tried it a couple times at the very beginning but soon realized that “Harry Potter” was a multi million project with a lot at stake. They dismissed the rumor that any scene had to be reshot because of hijincks.

- The several thousands of fans assembled for the event sang happy birthday to their Weasley characters.

- After the panel backstage I talked up Mt. Rainier with the guys. Both men have climbed the three tallest peaks in Britain and were eyeing our big mountain when it came out today. They just might add it to their Washington State road trip itinerary, they said.
