"The Book of Mormon" Broadway cast.
The Broadway smash hit “The Book of Mormon” is coming to The Paramount Theater early next year. It’s part of the 2012/2013 KeyBank Broadway at The Paramount season announced this week.

2013 starts with “Mormon” on January 8. The winner of nine 2011 Tony Awards, tickets for the production in New York sell out three months in advance. The musical is the brainchild of “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and “Avenue Q” co-creator Robert Lopez.

The musical’s story has two clean cut Mormon missionaries traveling to Uganda where they meet all sorts of characters that challenge everything they hold dear. If you are a “South Park” fan you’ll recognize Parker’s and Stone’s signature blend of foul-mouthed blasphemy mixed with old-fashioned song and dance numbers.

The New York Times’ Ben Brantley said, “I am here to report that a newborn, old-fashioned, pleasure-giving musical has arrived at the Eugene O’Neill Theater, the kind our grandparents told us left them walking on air if not on water. So hie thee hence, nonbelievers (and believers too), to ‘The Book of Mormon,’ and feast upon its sweetness.”

Following that the Seattle Repertory Theatre joins Seattle Theatre Group in presenting “War Horse.” Winner of five 2011 Tony Awards, including Best Play, the production is based on the best selling book. The recent Steven Spielberg movie was also based on the book but differs dramatically because of the two forms. The movie used cinematography and techniques to great effect while the play uses life-sized and highly stylized horses manipulated by puppeteers – along with actors – to tell its story. That story deals with the replacement of the horse with tanks in modern warfare and of the human-equestrian bond.

Other shows include “Wicked,” “Flashdance,” “Fela!” and “Sister Act.”

England, 1914. As World War One begins, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

This powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness that is currently playing to packed houses in London and New York. At its heart are astonishing life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, that bring to life breathing, galloping, charging horses strong enough for men to ride.

WICKED
Wednesday, October 10, 2012 – Saturday, November 17, 2012

Back by “Popular” demand. Variety calls WICKED “a cultural phenomenon,” and when it last played Seattle, it broke box office records and sold out in record time. Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times).

Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most complete – and completely satisfying – new musical in a long time” (USA Today).
