It’s not every day that a new Ramone gets christened. But that’s what happened to Yokohama, Japan DJ Macky after a gig in Tacoma in 2006.
Drummer Marky Ramone (the last living member of the lineup most remember as the seminal punk band the Ramones) was the main attraction at a June 16, 2006 show at Hell’s Kitchen. As the story goes, Marky was so taken with the Japanese performer’s DJ’ing skills he named Macky an official Ramone.
And now on May 6 DJ Macky Ramone is back at Hell’s Kitchen.
Macky will be performing with garage punk band The Beautiful Mothers. Mothers bass player Joey Lazerhead (aka Jeff Davis and owner of vinyl imprint Tsurumi Records) met Macky in Japan in 2005 and a musical collaboration has grown between the two. Their annual “Buzz Attitude” tour brings “Punky Parties” to alternating American and Japanese venues. This year they’re stateside and Tacoma bound.
Tsurumi Records has a love of vinyl and is home to The Second Academy, Tokyo’s Golden and Seattle’s own Fonzarelli.
