Statewide campaign on Common Core standards

You’ll be reading a lot more about Common Core standards in the coming months.

Today, the Ready Washington coalition is launching a new public awareness campaign called “Real Learning for Real Life” to help parents and the public better understand the Common Core State Standards. The K-12 learning standards in math and English language arts will be fully implemented in Washington public schools at every grade level in the 2013-14 school year.

Ready Washington is a new coalition formed by state and local education agencies and associations, as well as community and education advocacy organizations, to promote the standards.

Teachers talk class size, school funding and paychecks at WEA convention this week

Educators will gather in Bellevue this week for the Washington Education Association‘s annual Representative Assembly. The convention is the highest decision-making body in the 82,000-member association, which is the state’s largest union for educators.

Hot topics, according to a union news release, will be smaller class sizes, school funding and educator compensation. More than 1,200 K-12 and higher education employees will convene at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, beginning Thursday night and running through Saturday night.

Book discussion & author appearance: “Schools Cannot Do It Alone”

Parents, educators and others can talk about author Jamie Vollmer’s book, “Schools Cannot Do It Alone: Building Public Support for America’s Public Schools” in advance of his upcoming public appearance here.

A Community Book Study is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday March 22 at the Evergreen State College/Tacoma, 1210 6th Ave.

Vollmer will also be in Tacoma March 28, with a public presentation scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. March 28 in the Wilson High School auditorium, 1202 N. Orchard St.
