Charter school rules hearing coming to Tacoma

The public is invited to comment on rules being proposed by the body that will oversee charter schools in Washington state.

A public hearing of the state Charter School Commission was held earlier this month in Spokane, and a second hearing will take place in Tacoma. That hearing is set for 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. July 30 in the Tacoma Public Schools Central Administration Building, 601 S. Eighth Street.

The commission will also be holding a day-long meeting in Tacoma that day. It is scheduled for 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the same location.

Peninsula School District also bows out of charter school game

Like their counterparts in Tacoma, school board members in the Gig Harbor-area Peninsula School District have opted out of becoming a charter school authorizer.

Both the Peninsula and Tacoma boards had earlier indicated preliminary interest in the concept.

But on Thursday night, both said meeting the July 1 state deadline to apply for authorizer status would burden district staff who are busy with other work. Also like Tacoma, Peninsula board members left open the option of pursuing charter authorizer status in the future, Peninsula Superintendent Chuck Cuzzetto said.

Tacoma School Board seeks input on charters May 2

The Tacoma School Board wants to hear public input on whether it should become an authorizer of charter schools.

The board will host a public hearing Thursday, May 2, from 6 to 7 p.m., on the fourth floor of the Tacoma Public Schools Central Administration Building, 601 S. 8th St. The board will take no action that night. The amount of time allotted to each speaker will depend on how many people sign up to speak at the meeting.

Tacoma school board schedules discussions on charter schools, elementary education

The Tacoma School Board will meet with its elementary school principals and, in a separate discussion, talk about the ramifications of the state’s new charter school law, when it gathers this Thursday.

The discussion with principals is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday on the fourth floor auditorium at the district’s Central Administration Building, 601 S. Eighth St., Tacoma. A second discussion, that will include charter schools, is set to begin at 6 p.m.
