Sumner Board working on school sale

The Sumner School Board is working on a sale of McAlder Elementary School, which was closed to student use in September 2012.

The district had tried to lease the building, but found there was more interest from people who wanted to buy it, district spokeswoman Ann Cook said.

She said the district has a purchase agreement for the building, and it hopes to close the sale this summer.

The school, built in 1961, is located just off the Sumner-Orting Highway.

Cook said the board closed the school after a review and recommendation from the district’s facilities committee. She said that after the area was rezoned as agricultural resource land, district officials determined that there would be little future housing growth in the immediate area and little need for the school.

“The committee also considered other educational uses by the district for other programs, but the school was not considered suitable,” she said. She said this was both because of the location and the building’s condition.
