Kindergarteners in Tacoma Public Schools will have a different schedule than other students this fall.

A later start date in September allows teachers to get to know their students better through early parent-teacher conferences aimed at making the transition to kindergarten easier for students and their families.

Early entrance assessment
An early entrance to kindergarten screening for children who turn 5 between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31, 2013, is available during July. Families can contact the Early Learning Department at 253-571-1415 for an appointment. Based on the outcome of this assessment, some students may attend kindergarten on a conditional basis for 30 days before a final decision is made.

Elementary schools will be open for kindergarten enrollment from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 19 to 22.

Kindergarten schedule
Sept. 4-6:
No classes due to partnership conferences with parents. Families will receive more information in August about options for meeting with their student’s teacher.

Sept. 9:

School starts

In October, kindergarten students will have two early release days for teachers to complete their students’ assessment.
