Construction is expected to begin July 8 at Washington Elementary School in Tacoma’s Proctor District, Tacoma Public Schools announced.

The Tacoma School Board selected Babbit Neuman Construction Co. of  Steilacoom as the general contractor for the school renovation project.

Washington’s main elementary school building at 3701 N. 26th St. dates to 1901, with additions and expansions in 1905, 1967 and 1968.

A move from Washington to the old Hunt Middle School, 6501 S. 10th St., is scheduled to begin June 20. That’s where Washington students will attend school this fall.

The renovated Washington is scheduled to open in September 2014.
