Charges filed against Winthrop tenant in arson case

Pierce County prosecutors have filed arson charges against a 45-year-old man suspected of setting small fires inside the garbage rooms at the Winthrop Apartments in downtown Tacoma.

Theophil J. Braa was charged Tuesday with six counts of first-degree arson. He told investigators he set the fires “because the management of the apartment building was not doing anything about the illegal activities in the building and he wanted to get the attention of the police,” charging documents state.

Man arrested in connection with arsons at Winthrop

Tacoma police have arrested a man suspected in at least some of the eight suspicious fires at a downtown apartment building.

The 45-year-old man was interviewed by a Tacoma police detective Friday. He’s been booked into jail on arson and reckless endangerment charges, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

The man was arrested at the Winthrop Apartments, 776 Commerce St., on unrelated charges Thursday. The Tacoma police detective who’s been investigating the eight suspicious fires inside the building in recent weeks was notified of the arrest and the man’s possibly involvement in the fires, Fulghum said.

Another two fires reported at Winthrop in Tacoma

Tacoma firefighters and police officers responded to two more fires at the Winthrop Apartments in downtown overnight, the Fire Department confirmed this morning.

This brings the tally to eight suspicious blazes in the past month.

Investigators are looking into the fires and are trying to determine who is starting them. Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and charges filed in the case.

Two more fires at Winthrop Apartments

Tacoma Fire crews responded to two more fires at the Winthrop Apartments in downtown Tacoma on Tuesday.

Police and fire crews have been called to the building, at 776 Commerce St., for similar calls for more than a month. Tuesday’s fires were started in trash cans on the seventh and ninth floors. During the fires, the building was evacuated and crews blocked Commerce Street.

Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is looking for information related to the fires and previous false alarms. Damages from fires last month were estimated at $2,500 and 15,000.
