UPDATED: DV suspect surrenders to Tacoma police

UPDATED at 2:09 p.m.

Tacoma police have arrested a state Department of Corrections correctional officer suspected in a domestic dispute that prompted a lockdown this morning at a West End elementary school.

Officers spotted the officer”s car near North 10 Street and Skyline Drive and surrounded him about 12:25 p.m. After talking with a negotiator, the man surrendered without further incident just before 1:10 p.m., Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

DOC corrections spokesman Chad Lewis confirmed the man is a correctional officer at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton.

Tacoma police searching for man who robbed West End grocery store

Tacoma police are searching for a man who robbed a West End grocery store clerk at gunpoint this afternoon.

The robbery occurred inside the Safeway at 2637 N. Pearl St. about 12:45 p.m., police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. A man wielding a black handgun robbed the clerk, taking cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The robber left the store. He’s described as black, in his 20s and about 5 feet 8 with a medium to heavy build, Fulghum said. He wore a black jacket, black shirt and dark-colored jeans.

Five teens arrested after a series of car break-ins near Vassault Park

Tacoma police arrested five teenagers early today on suspicion of breaking into a handful of vehicles in the West End.

The four 17-year-old boys and 15-year-old girl were booked into Remann Hall juvenile jail on suspicion of first-degree malicious mischief and first-degree possession of stolen property, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

WHAT WAS THAT: Police activity in West End, Day Island areas

Tacoma police, a Puyallup police dog and Pierce County sheriff’s deputies were in the West End area this morning, looking for a man suspected in a robbery at a nearby apartment complex.

The robbery was reported shortly after 8 a.m. The victim told officers a man armed with a box cutter tried to take some of his property during a confrontation in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Westridge Avenue West, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

The victim reportedly fought off the robber and was cut on the arm. The suspect fled toward the Day Island area.

UPDATED: Man robs West End mini mart

A man armed with a gun robbed a West End mini mart this morning, the Tacoma Police Department reported.

The robbery occurred around 5:40 a.m. at Taggers Mini Mart, 6615 S. 12th St. The robber wielded a gun and took money and cigarettes from the store, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

The suspect left the store on foot. Officers set up a perimeter in the area and a police dog conducted a track. The dog did not find the suspect, Fulghum said.

Man robs West End convenience store at gunpoint

Tacoma police were searching for a man suspected of robbing a West End convenience store at gunpoint this morning.

The robber walked into the Union 76 food mart at 1822 S. Jackson Ave. about 5:30 a.m., Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. He went to the counter, showed a gun and demanded cash and cigarettes.

The clerk handed the robber an undisclosed amount of money and several packs of cigarettes. The robber left on foot, Fulghum said.

Tacoma police officers set up a perimeter and a police dog searched for the suspect. He was not located.

Caregiver tied up in break-in at Tacoma adult family home

Tacoma police are investigating a home-invasion robbery Monday night at an adult family home in the West End of Tacoma.

No one was injured in the break-in, but a caregiver in the house was tied up with tape and the house ransacked, according to police spokesman Mark Fulghum.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. at The Abbott House, a state-licensed home in the 1000 block of South Oxford Street.

Three more charged in West End homicide; two remain on the loose

Pierce County prosecutors have charged three more men in connection with a deadly shooting earlier this month inside a West End home.

Carlos R. Basilio, 23; Alfredo Villagomez Felices, 20; and Antonio Gonzalez Vasquez, 24; were charged Friday with first-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with the May 12 shooting in the 3300 block of North Visscher Street. Basilio is being held in Pierce County Jail in lieu of $1.5 million bail; Vasquez on $1.25 million bail and Felices on $1 million bail.

Juan Zuniga-Gonzalez, 26, was killed and another man injured in the shooting.
