Police looking for suspect in May University Place bleach attack

University Place police are looking for Deara Lewis, 22, who allegedly threw bleach in another woman’s face at a convenience store in May, because the victim testified against her baby’s father.

She has been charged with intimidating a witness, first-degree robbery and second-degree assault.

Lewis is five-feet, one inch and 170 pounds.

Deputies looking for man in assault on University Place woman

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department has released a sketch of a man suspected of assaulting a University Place woman earlier this month.

Detectives hope the public can identify the suspect in the sketch. Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the attacker and charges filed in the case.

A woman had been inside her first-floor apartment on 70th Avenue West when she heard someone tapping on the glass sliding door about 11:20 p.m. July 11, deputies reported.  She looked outside and saw a man she didn’t know. He had his pants

University Place car prowler caught on surveillance camera

University Place police officers are searching for a man suspected of stealing items out of several cars parked outside homes on Day Island.

The department released surveillance images of the suspect today in hopes that someone recognizes him and calls police. The Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the man’s arrest and charges filed in the case.

Elderly man found incompetent to stand trial in University Place murder case

A 93-year-old man accused of killing his caregiver at a University Place adult care home in 2008 has been found incompetent to stand trial.

A Pierce County judge ruled that Joe Elder, who has dementia, cannot be restored to competency and dismissed the murder charge against him this afternoon. Pierce County prosecutors and Elder’s defense attorneys jointly recommended the action.

Elder had been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Ramoncito Barro. The 39-year-old father of five was killed  when he brought Elder some fruit at Total Care AFH, an adult-care home in the 5800 block of 62nd

Vigil tonight for 3-year-old killed on tricycle in University Place

This just in from David Anderson, president of the Tillicum/Woodbrook Neighborhood Association…

A candlelight vigil for Saniah Marcus, the 3-year-old girl who was accidently killed while riding her tricycle Monday, will be held Friday, April 16, 6 p.m. at Happy Days Daycare, 8311 27th St. SW, in University Place.

Missy Reid, Happy Days Director, said the vigil is open to the public and that people can bring flowers, pictures, and that a grief counselor will be present.  Saniah had attended Happy Days Daycare all three of her years, along with her siblings.  Donations will be accepted to cover funeral expenses.

Girl killed while riding tricycle identified, donation fund established

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 3-year-old girl who was run over and killed while riding her tricycle Monday afternoon in University Place.

Saniah Marcus died on the way to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Health Center.

Pierce County sheriff’s investigators have said Saniah’s death appears to be an accident. Her mother’s fiance was pulling out of the driveway about 4:30 p.m. in the 9100 block of Madrone Circle West.

The 25-year-old man had asked a group of kids who were playing around the SUV to get out of the way. They did.

Crews put out basement fire at University Place home

Firefighters doused flames inside a basement of a University Place home this morning.

The fire was reported just before 7 a.m. in the 8100 block of Cirque Drive. A smoke detector had alerted the homeowner’s son to the flames in the basement of the home, Assistant Chief Dave Dupille said. He woke up his parents and all go out safely.

Fire crews found heavy smoke coming from the basement when they arrived. Firefighters quickly put out the blaze. The flames were contained to one room, which was being used as a small shop area, Dupille said.

UPDATED: Verdict reached in University Place murder trial

A Pierce County jury has reached a verdict in the trial of a man accused of fatally shooting a University Place resident in his apartment last year.

News Tribune court reporter Adam Lynn is at the courthouse and will report on the jury’s decision.

The jurors have been deliberating the fate of Marcus Thaddeus Clayton, 23. Prosecutors have charged him with first-degree murder in the March 10, 2009, death of Darryl Bracey, 61.
