University of Puget Sound library evacuated after small fire

The University of Puget Sound library was evacuated today after a small fire that seems to have been started by a heating and air conditioning fan in a mechanical room, said Tacoma fire spokesman Joe Meinecke.

No one was injured in the fire that started about 1:30 p.m.

The blaze was extinguished, but firefighters continue to try to rid the building of smoke. Meinecke said.

University spokeswoman Sarah Stall said the library would remain closed Wednesday and would reopen Thursday after the Fourth of July.

Bail $500,000 for man charged with pointing gun at UPS security guard

A 27-year-old man this afternoon pleaded not guilty to pointing a gun at a University of Puget Sound security guard during a confrontation last month.

Pierce County Court Commissioner Meagan Foley ordered Bryan Windmeyer jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Windmeyer is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, felony harassment, unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle and second-degree vehicle prowling in the April 25 incident at the Tacoma school.

Tacoma police continue to search for a man suspected of firing at two University of Puget Sound campus security officers Wednesday night.

Police investigators have an idea who they are looking for, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said today. They have not released a description of the suspect.

The campus security officers confronted the man about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday near Union Avenue and North 14th Street. The security officers had been alerted to a man trying to break into cars behind several university-owned houses.
