WHAT WAS THAT: Police activity Tuesday on the Puyallup River was training event

Any idea whats going on in Puyallup on the river right now? They have a very low flying ‘copter and boats with search lights buzzing up and down the river behind the Safeway on Main St right now and have been at it for an hour or so…They’re looking hard for someone!

Puyallup police Lt. Dave McDonald explained what the action was all about:

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue was doing some swift water rescue training that involved a helicopter, near the Mama Stortini’s restaurant.


Spill preparedness training today near Point Defiance Marina

Representatives from the state Department of Ecology, Tacoma Fire Department and a private spill-response contractor will be participating in a training exercise today near the Point Defiance Marina.

During the exercise, boats will be in the water, deploying and anchoring an oil containment boom, according to the ecology department. No oil has been spilled.

The participants will be doing spill preparedness training.

The training is scheduled to begin about 10 a.m. and will go for several hours.


Training burn today in Lakewood

Lakewood firefighters will be participating in a training burn exercise today at a building on Pacific Highway Southwest.

The burn begins at 9 a.m. at 12588 Pacific Highway S.W.

“The purpose of the burn is to give firefighters training in live fire,” a press release stated. “Crews will be able to set approximately 3 fires prior to letting the building burn down.”

The training is expected to wrap up about 1 p.m.


Pierce County shakin’ and quakin’ today in training drill

Hundreds of people, area schools and hospitals and more than 50 agencies will be participating in a two-day earthquake drill that starts today in Pierce County.

The first day of the countywide “Shake ‘n Quake” exercise will involve about 500 people from 50 agencies, according to a press release. They’ll be reacting to a magnitude 7.1 earthquake along the Tacoma Fault line. That line passes under Tacoma, Federal Way and Gig Harbor.

Firefighters practice their “jaws of life” skills this weekend in Gig Harbor

Seventy-two firefighters are hard at work in Gig Harbor this weekend at a “Jaws of Life” training class.

Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One is hosting the class, “Crunch Time,” today and Sunday at the Gig Harbor Training Center, 10222 Bujajcich Road N.W.  The class runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, the agency reported.

Firefighters attending the training have traveled from throughout the state, Oregon, Idaho, California and British Columbia.
