UPDATED: Two injured when car hits train in Lakewood

Two people were injured early today after their car hit a cargo train at a Lakewood railroad crossing.

The crash occurred about 3:15 a.m. at the intersection of 100th Street and Lakeview Avenue Southwest, the Lakewood Fire Department reported.

One of the car’s occupants had been able to get out of the vehicle before firefighters arrived. Fire crews extricated the other occupant, the department reported.

Both were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries.

No one on the train was injured. Lakewood police were investigating the crash.

Woman hit and killed by Amtrak train in Steilacoom

A 20-year-old woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Monday evening near Sunnyside Beach Park in Steilacoom, according to media reports.

Gus Melonas, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman, told KING-5 News that witnesses reported several young women near the double mainline tracks.

The woman was hit by a southbound Amtrak headed from Seattle to Eugene, Ore. She was not immediately identified.

Steilacoom police chief Robert Drozynski told the TV station that there is a pedestrian crossing in the area with a warning horn, flashers and a rail crossing sign.
