DOT employee charged with theft in alleged payroll scam

A former employee in the state Department of Transportation’s Lakewood office has been charged with four counts of first degree theft for allegedly stealing nearly $67,000 in unearned pay and improper purchases.

Rachel Taylor, 30, of Tenino,  appeared Thursday in Pierce County Superior Court on the felony charges.

The thefts allegedly took place between 2006 and 2009. Taylor was hired by the state is 2004 as a senior secretary.

According to court documents, Taylor allegedly  would change entries on her timecard. In 2006, the alleged theft of pay totaled about $2,588. The next year the amount jumped to $20,307. In

Pair suspected of snatching purses at Lakewood stores

Lakewood police have arrested a 52-year-old woman suspected of stealing the purses – or items from inside – of several older women as they shopped in Lakewood stores.

The Lakewood woman was booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of 14 counts of second-degree theft and 19 counts of second-degree identity theft Thursday evening. She’s scheduled to make her first court appearance this afternoon.

Police detectives believe the woman and a 54-year-old man were working together, Lakewood police Lt. Dave Guttu said. They would target older women who walked away from their shopping carts and left their purses unattended.

UPDATED: Gig Harbor police looking for toilet pipe thieves

Gig Harbor police need the public’s help in finding at least two men suspected of removing the piping from the toilets at four businesses in the city over the past few weeks.

Investigators believe the suspects might be looking for the brass and copper parts within the pipes, Sgt. Kelly Busey said. They’ve been going into the public bathrooms at the businesses.

“The suspects know how to turn off the water before removing the piping that extends from the wall to the back of the toilet,” he said.

Two sought in theft, credit card fraud case

University Place sheriff’s deputies needs the public’s help in finding two people suspected of credit card fraud and theft.

The suspects – a man and woman – were captured on surveillance cameras at a grocery store in University Place. Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers released images of the suspects today in hopes the public can help identify them.

Deputies reported a woman shopping in the grocery store on Bridgeport Way had her wallet stolen just after 4 p.m. Aug. 24.

Within 10 minutes, two suspects used a credit card stolen from the woman’s wallet to buy a $1,400 television, $300 worth
