Tacoma Rainiers event raises nearly $10,000 for slain officers families

The Tacoma Rainiers’ tribute last weekend to the six Puget Sound police officers killed in the line of duty in 2009 raised nearly $10,000 for the officers’ families, the team reported this week.

The Rainiers had deemed Saturday’s matchup “S.H.I.E.L.D.” Night as a way to celebrate and remember the six¬† officers who were killed in the line of duty last year. Seattle police officer Timothy Brenton was gunned down Oct. 31 while sitting in a patrol car; Lakewood police Sgt. Mark Renninger and officers Tina Griswold, Ronald Owens and Greg Richards were ambushed in a Parkland coffee shop Nov.

Tacoma Rainiers to honor region’s fallen officers

The Tacoma Rainiers will honor the Puget Sound-area officers who were killed in the line of duty last year at a game Saturday night.

The 7 p.m. baseball game will be a “tribute to and celebration of the lives of Western Washington’s fallen officers,” a team press release states. The team is calling Saturday “S.H.I.E.L.D.” night. (S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for Safety, Honor, Integrity, Enforce, Leadership, Defend.)

The proceeds from the single game tickets for Saturday’s matchup will be donated to the Lakewood Police Independent Guild Charitable Fund to assist the families of Lakewood police Sgt. Mark Renninger and officers Tina Griswold,
