UPDATED: Pole fire cause of power outage in Lakewood, Steilacoom, University Place, South Tacoma and JBLM areas

About 1,000 Lakewood residents face not having power restored tonight after a pole fire that caused power outages across Pierce County.

Tacoma Public Utilities crews are working to replace the damaged equipment and reroute power to restore service after the fire, which the agency reported about 5:30 p.m.

Power was lost in the Lakewood, Steilacoom, University Place, South Tacoma and Joint Base Lewis-McChord areas after the fire at 75th Street West and Bridgeport Way in Lakewood, TPU spokeswoman Chris Gleason said.

The cause of the fire and boundaries of the outage were still being determined.

Woman refused to open door for man appearing to impersonate utility worker at North End home, agency says

A Tacoma Public Utilities customer in the North End of the city reported that a man knocked on her door a few nights ago and said he was doing electrical work affecting her home and wanted to speak with her, according to the agency.

She did not open the door.

Agency officials ask that customers who encounter someone pretending to be a utility employee call the police.

TPU employees don’t often go door to door, the agency said, and do not ask to go into homes.

Employees carry a badge with their picture, name and employee ID number.

UPDATED: Power restored after large outage in East Pierce County

UPDATED at 12:33 p.m.

About 26,000 Tacoma Power customers  in East Pierce County lost  electricity this morning after a large transmission line went down.

The outages stretched from Spanaway to the Roy area, darkening schools and intersections.

The power has been restored, Tacoma Public Utilities reported around 12:30 p.m.

Utilities crews report that a transmission line went down after large insulators failed.

The outage impacted several schools in the Bethel School District. The district reports that those schools remained in session.
