Tacoma receives $105,000 grant for gang reduction and intervention program

A $105,000 grant from the Washington State Partnership Council on Juvenile Justice will fund a pilot gang reduction and intervention program from Aug. 1 to June 30, 2013, the city of Tacoma says.

The city will take input from agencies such as Tacoma Public Schools, the Tacoma Police Department and Pierce County Juvenile Court, as well as citizens, to help direct community groups involved with the program.

The funds will go to four organizations that will help with the pilot: the Northwest Leadership Foundation, Bold Solutions, Fab5 and the Tacoma Urban League.

UPDATED: Police explosive experts called to Tacoma Public Schools building

Update July 24, 4:18 p.m.: The suspected pipe bomb found Monday was not explosive, Tacoma police said.

The capped pipe “had been out in the weather for a while,” and experts determined today that it was not explosive, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

Update 6:15 Police have given the all clear and are allowing traffic through the area. They are still attempting to determine whether the suspicious package was explosive, spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

Initial post: Tacoma police explosive experts are investigating an unusual package found this afternoon outside the Tacoma Public Schools Professional Development Center.
