Search warrant opening reveals details in Powell case


A witness told police that Josh Powell spoke of killing someone and disposing of a body, according to a search warrant unsealed this afternoon in the case of his father, Steven Powell.

The newly unsealed warrant also revealed that Charlie Powell, the couple’s son, said “my mom is dead” as early as January 3, 2009, shortly after Susan Cox Powell disappeared.

The warrant says Susan Cox Powell’s cell phone was found in Josh’s car after she disappeared and that he couldn’t explain why.

Pierce County Judge Nelson to stay mum on Powell case

This just in from Pierce County:

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Kathryn Nelson has no current comment on the very tragic events of Feb. 5, which involved cases assigned to her department. The Code of Judicial Conduct 2.10 prohibits comments on “pending and impending matters” that may come before a court. Since Judge Nelson cannot foresee whether related matters may come before the court, she cannot comment in the current matter.

It’s been two years since Susan Cox Powell disappeared; could police make a case without a body?

This week marks the second anniversary of the disappearance of Puyllup native Susan Cox Powell from her Utah home. In updating the case, The Salt Lake Tribune is asking a key question: What happens if her body is never found?

Finding any remains would end the nearly two-year mystery of Powell’s disappearance, giving her family answers and providing something else: evidence. But in the absence of discovering a body, putting together a criminal case in connection with Powell’s disappearance is a lot tougher.

UPDATED: Powell pleads not guilty in court appearance today

UPDATED as of 1:55 p.m.

Steven C. Powell, the father-in-law of a missing Utah mother, has pleaded not guilty to charges of voyeurism and possession of inappropriate pictures of minors.

A judge set his bail at $200,000 during an afternoon court appearance. He’s been ordered to have no contact with children.

Prosecutors have charged Powell, 61, with 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexually-explicit conduct. If convicted as charged, he faces up to five years in prison.

UPDATED: Investigators reportedly look for computers, journals in Susan Powell search

Investigators were reportedly looking for the journals of a missing Utah mother when they searched the South Hill home Thursday where her husband and two children have been living.

Detectives from West Valley City, Utah, and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spent hours at the home where Josh Powell has been living since wife, Susan Cox Powell, disappeared in December 2009. Josh Powell, 35, is a person of interest in the case but has never been arrested or charged. He’s denied harming his wife.

Investigators searching South Hill home of Susan Powell’s husband, father-in-law


UPDATED: About 20 investigators from Utah and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday started searching the South Hill home of the husband and father-in-law of a Utah mother missing since 2009.

Susan Cox Powell, a Puyallup native, was last seen at her West Valley City, Utah, home on Dec. 6, 2009. There’s been no trace of her since.

Her 35-year-old husband, Josh Powell, long has been considered a person of interest in his wife’s disappearance. He denies harming his wife and has not been arrested or charged.

UPDATED: Police searching several locations in Nevada in Susan Powell case

UPDATE: Police investigators declined to talk about the developments in the case during the press conference.

Detectives are searching several locations in the area and will be taking members of the media along.

They are following up on information in the case, but a spokesman declined to say what that information is. He described the case as an investigation.
