UPDATED: Scuba diver drowns in Steilacoom

UPDATE: The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the woman as Leslie Jacobsen of Yelm.

A 63-year-old woman drowned Monday while scuba diving with a companion near Sunnyside Beach in Steilacoom.

Her name was not released, pending notification of her family.

The diving partner pulled the unconscious woman onto Sunnyside Beach shortly before 2 p.m. and help was called, Town Administrator Paul Loveless said.

Paramedics tried to revive the woman but were unsuccessful.

Tukwila man hit, killed by train in Steilacoom area

A 32-year-old Tukwila man was hit and killed by a train early Thursday in the Steilacoom area.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled Ryan E. Stieer’s death as an accident.

He was killed early Thursday on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks in the Steilacoom area, the office reported.

No other information about what happened was immediately available.

Fire burns in building of defunct paper mill in Steilacoom

A fire broke out Thursday night in one of the remaining buildings at the old Abitibi-Consolidated paper mill in Steilacoom.

Crews are now letting the flames burn out.

“We are letting it take its course,” said Ron Schaub, chief of Steilacoom’s Public Safety Department.

The old paper mill is being torn down. A bystander noticed smoke coming from the property Thursday night and called 911, Schaub said.

Crews arrived to find flames in the rafters of a building along the back of the property, Schaub said. Firefighters poured 2,000 gallons of water on the flames.

Six charged with stealing copper from old Steilacoom paper mill

Pierce County prosecutors have charged six men with burglarizing and stealing copper metal from a defunct paper mill in Steilacoom.

The charges of second-degree burglary and first-degree theft were filed Tuesday. The defendants range in age from 36 to 53.

Charging documents provide the following information:

A bystander called Steilacoom public safety officers early Monday to report a suspicious person/possible vehicle prowl in progress on Ira Light Street.

Officers responded and stopped a van that was leaving the area. They detained three men who were inside.

The men told officers they’d gone to Steilacoom to steal copper and metal items

Woman hit and killed by Amtrak train in Steilacoom

A 20-year-old woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Monday evening near Sunnyside Beach Park in Steilacoom, according to media reports.

Gus Melonas, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman, told KING-5 News that witnesses reported several young women near the double mainline tracks.

The woman was hit by a southbound Amtrak headed from Seattle to Eugene, Ore. She was not immediately identified.

Steilacoom police chief Robert Drozynski told the TV station that there is a pedestrian crossing in the area with a warning horn, flashers and a rail crossing sign.

Prosecutors charge man in Steilacoom sexual assault

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a 46-year-old man with first-degree rape, alleging he sexually assaulted a woman twice after threatening her with a gun.

In addition to rape, Lewis E. Dennard was charged today with felony harassment and unlawful imprisonment while armed with a firearm. Dennard was scheduled to be arraigned on the allegations this afternoon.

The incident allegedly occurred last week. The victim told a Steilacoom public safety officer that she and Dennard had spent the evening together and consumed alcohol.
