Deputy among 5 injured in crash near Orting

UPDATE as of 10:54 p.m. The State Patrol says six people were injured in the crash. A 36-year-old Orting man stopped to turn left onto 144th Street East in a tan 2004 Kia Sedona van, with three passengers between the ages of six and 13, according to the State Patrol. An 18-year-old Orting man slowed a maroon 2000 two-door Ford Mustang he was driving, which was pushed into the van when it was hit by a white four-door 2009 Ford Crown Victoria driven by a 28-year-old Orting man, according to the State Patrol. ALL CLEAR: SR 162 in South Prairie blocked by crash

A crash is blocking both directions of state Route 162 at the South Prairie Creek Bridge in Pierce County, the state DOT reports.

The incident began about 1:20 p.m. Troopers were on the scene and medical aid was en route.

UPDATE: The crash has been cleared away and all lanes are back open to traffic.

UPDATED: Man killed in SR 162 crash near Orting identified

A 48-year-old man was killed early today when his car crashed while heading west on state Route 162 near 177th Street East, the Washington State Patrol reports.

Troopers initially thought another person might have been in – or thrown from – the wrecked vehicle. However, they searched the area and found no one, trooper Brandy Kessler said.

The man has been identified as Daniel B. Rodgers of Orting.

The one-car crash occurred just after 4:30 a.m. Rodgers was headed westbound on state Route 162 when his 2010 BMW left the roadway, lost control and struck the pillars of a railroad
