Trooper charged with felony hit-and-run, eluding police vehicle

A state trooper pleaded not guilty this afternoon to charges that he failed to remain at the scene of an injury accident and then attempted to elude authorities.

David Lambert Bertholf, 48, was off-duty Sunday when he allegedly hit a vehicle and fled as traffic slowed on eastbound state Route 16 near Union Ave, State Patrol spokesman Cpt. Rob Huss said.

Bertholf has been with the State Patrol for 20 years, and is currently a K-9 handler trooper assigned to the homeland security division out of the Bainbridge area, Huss said.

Witnesses called in the accident about 2:40 p.m. Sunday.

Two charged after race across Narrows Bridge results in injury crash

Pierce County prosecutors have charged two men in connection with a high-speed race on state Route 16 near the Tacoma Narrows Bridge last month that ended in a crash and left two bystanders injured.

Prosecutors allege Richard Hernandez Vadillo, 21, and Peter F. Hungate, 54, raced eastbound from the Narrows Bridge toll plaza. They crossed the bridge at speeds between 85 and 100 mph the night of July 1, court documents state. Vadillo was driving a black BMW; Hungate a white Porsche.

Two lanes of SR 16 reopened

The state Department of Transportation has reopened two lanes of westbound state Route 16 across the Narrows Bridge that had been closed.

Crews closed the right lanes for repairs Thursday. The lanes were reopened to drivers at 4 a.m. today.

ALL CLEAR: Two incidents on SR 16 this morning

The right lane of a state Route 16 on-ramp is blocked by a two-car crash, the state DOT reports.

The crash is on the eastbound on-ramp from SR 16 to northbound Interstate 5, DOT reported just after 9 a.m.

Troopers were on the scene.

UPDATE: Police activity also is blocking the right two lanes of mid-span westbound SR 16 of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the state DOT reports at 9:15 a.m.

Troopers are on the scene.

UPDATE 2: The police activity that was blocking mid-span has been cleared. All westbound lanes are now open, DOT reports.

Bremerton man clipped by a car, injured while walking on SR 16

A 26-year-old Bremerton man was injured late Saturday while walking along state Route 16 about six miles west of Gig Harbor, the Washington State Patrol reported.

A 19-year-old man was driving westbound on the highway just after 11:30 p.m. when he spotted the Bremerton man walking on the roadway. The driver swerved to avoid the pedestrian but hit him with the right front tire, troopers reported.

The Bremerton man suffered injuries to his left leg. His spouse took him from the scene for medical treatment.

The investigation was continuing.

UPDATED:Crash involving semi blocks lane of SR 16 in Kitsap County

A rolled-over semi is blocking the right lane of eastbound State Route 16 near Gorst, the state DOT and KIRO TV reports.

The incident began about 7:40 a.m.

The semi lost its load of scrap cars on SR 16 at State Route 3, KIRO TV reports.

UPDATE: All lanes are now blocked by this crash investigation, DOT reports on Twitter. Drivers are getting around the scene using the left shoulder.

Home man killed in SR 16 motorcycle crash

A 39-year-old man from Home was killed Sunday evening when his motorcycle crashed into a concrete barrier on State Route 16 in Port Orchard, the Washington State Patrol reported.

The crash occurred just after 5:15 p.m. along eastbound SR 16 at Sidney Road.

Douglas Guy was headed east on SR 16 when he went from the left lane to the right lane, then hit the concrete overpass barrier, troopers reported. Guy was ejected and hit a fence.

Troopers continue to investigate what led up to the crash.
