Charges filed against man in shooting at Spanaway bar

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a 62-year-old man in connection with a shooting Saturday night at a fundraising event for families of cancer patients.

Derek Warren Harms, a member of the Ghostriders motorcycle club, told detectives he and other Ghostriders had been invited to meet with members of the Bandidos to “work out prior misunderstandings,” court documents state.

He arrived at “Metal Fest” at Uncle Sam’s American Bar and Grill, 16003 Pacific Ave. S., with two others. The Bandidos participate in events for an umbrella fundraising group called Bikers Fighting Cancer.

UPDATED: Two suffer minor smoke inhalation in house fire near Spanaway Lake

UPDATED at 1:38 p.m.

Two people suffered minor injures this morning while trying to see if anyone was inside a neighbor’s house after a fire broke out on the deck.

Both were checked out by paramedics and released at the scene, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue Assistant Chief Randy Stephens said.

Neighbors spotted smoke coming from the home at 16th Avenue South and Creso Road South near Spanaway Lake just before 10:50 a.m. and 911.

Family members searching for missing Spanaway man

Family members and friends are searching for an 18-year-old Spanaway man who hasn’t been seen in nearly a week.

Chris Virdell was last seen Thursday between 9 and 10 a.m. in the area of 224th Street East and 42nd Avenue East, according to a post on the Bethel School District’s website. He was supposed to catch a Pierce Transit bus to work at a South Hill grocery store but never showed up for his 11:30 a.m. shift.

Detectives trying to ID suspect in Spanaway pawn shop burglary

Pierce County sheriff’s detectives are hoping someone recognizes a man suspected of burglarizing a Spanaway pawn shop and stealing four handguns last month.

Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers released a surveillance image of the suspect today.

Investigators say the burglar pried open a security door at AA Okay Loans & Pawnshop, 14416 Pacific Ave. S.,  about 5:30 a.m. Dec. 30.

Once inside, the man smashed a glass display case and stole four semi-automatic guns, detectives reported. He then left the store.

Man pleads guilty in 2010 Spanaway crash

A 22-year-old man has pleaded guilty to causing a wreck that killed his passenger last year in Spanaway.

Leroy E. Johnson faces two years, seven months to three years, five years in prison when he’s sentenced Dec. 9.

Johnson pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of vehicular homicide for the Aug. 7, 2010, crash that killed 21-year-old Samuel Rees Powell.

Prosecutors alleged Johnson’s car ran a red light at the intersection of 224th Street East and 46th Avenue East. The car struck a minivan.

Woman arrested in connection with arson at Spanaway store

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a woman in connection with an arson earlier this month at a Spanaway Kmart.

Detectives received an anonymous tip on the woman’s identity and conducted a followup investigation. Lakewood police arrested the 21-year-old woman on an outstanding theft warrant,  Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. She was later booked on suspicion of first-degree arson for the Kmart fire.

Flames broke out inside the Kmart, 17911 Pacific Ave. S., about 7:30 p.m. April 13. The fire was set in the painting supply area of the store and sparked several explosions in spray paint canisters

Deputies want to ID woman in connection with arsons at Spanaway stores

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is releasing surveillance images of a woman they’d like to talk to as part of their investigation into arsons Wednesday night at two Spanaway stores.

Security cameras at Kmart captured the woman walking out a side door with a shopping cart full of merchandise after a fire erupted inside the store about 7:30 p.m., sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

She hid the cart in the alley. A short time later, another fire was started in the Dollar Store near the Kmart.

UPDATED: Fires at neighboring Spanaway stores believed to be arson

Investigators suspect fires set at two Spanaway stores Wednesday night were arson and now are looking at whether the same person started both.

“We are going with that they are linked together and looking for evidence to prove that,” Central Pierce Fire & Rescue Assistant Chief Randy Stephens said this morning.

Pierce County sheriff’s investigators have no suspects in the case as of this morning. They will be reviewing surveillance footage as part of their search for who might be responsible for the blazes.
