Firefighter stair climb in honor of West Pierce crew member’s son raises more than $1.2 million

Firefighters climbed 69 flights of stairs to the top of Columbia Tower in Seattle today while wearing their 50-pound work gear,  in honor of 6-year-old Cole Vukich of University Place.

The kindergartner  is currently in remission after fighting a rare blood cancer since he was 2.

The 22nd Annual Scott Firefighter Stair Climb brought more than 1,550 firefighters to Seattle, including Vukich’s father, a West Pierce Fire & Rescue worker who planned to make the trek.

Unofficial calculations are that the event raised more than its goal of $1.2 million to support the Washington/Alaska Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma
