Police response puts 4 Covington schools in lockdown

Four schools in Covington were briefly locked down today while King County sheriff’s deputies surrounded the home of a 40-year-old man who had barricaded himself inside with a gun.

It was about 1:30 p.m. when the man’s adult son called 911 to report that he had fought with his father, who then retreated to a bedroom and allegedly loaded a gun.

The son left the house in the 26700 block of 191st Place Southeast while his mother called the Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE: Lockdown ends at Federal Way school

Rainier View Elementary School in Federal Way is in lockdown.

Federal Way Public Schools reports that a bomb squad is headed to the school because staff and students noticed a suspicious object on the playground this morning.

The school is at 3015 S. 368th St.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.

UPDATE, 12:35 p.m.: The lockdown at Rainier View Elementary School has ended, according to the Federal Way Public Schools website.

The King County Sheriff’s Department has finished its sweep of the area and the disposal of the suspicious package, the district reports.

UPDATE: Arlington Elementary School in lockdown after nearby home burglary

A Tacoma elementary school was in lockdown Thursday afternoon while police investigated a home burglary nearby.

Arlington Elementary School at 3002 S. 72nd St. was placed on lockdown around 2 p.m. while police used dogs to search the area, according to Tacoma Public Schools spokeswoman Stacy Flores. The lockdown ended at 3:05 p.m., and class was dismissed at 3:30 p.m., the usual time.

High school in Parkland briefly locked down today

Washington High School in Parkland was locked down briefly this afternoon after two students made threats toward one another, a school official said.

The lockdown, which lasted from 12:15 to 12:40 p.m., was a precautionary measure, said Willie Painter, spokesman for Franklin Pierce School District.

“It’s not an issue at this point in time,” he said. “It’s pretty much back to normal.”

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the school at 12420 Ainsworth Ave. S. to investigate.

Tacoma middle school on lockdown

Tacoma’s Giaudrone Middle School was in lockdown Monday as police responded to reports of a student carrying a handgun, a district official said.

The school was locked down shortly after 1 p.m. after a student reportedly hid a handgun in his or her backpack.

Tacoma police responded within the hour, arresting a student and also confiscating a handgun, Tacoma schools spokesman Dan Voelpel said. All students were safe but the lockdown remained in effect as of about 1:45

UPDATED: Lockdown over at elementary school in Bethel district

UPDATE: The lockdown has been lifted and students are being released.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said the school was locked down because of its proximity to Timberland Bank, 2419 224th St. E. The bank was robbed this morning. The bandit presented a note and threatened to detonate an explosive, Troyer said.

The robber has not been arrested.

Police activity prompted 4 Puyallup-area schools to be in modified lockdown; now lifted

Four Puyallup School District schools were in a modified lockdown for about an hour this morning because of nearby police activity.

The lockdown at Emerald Ridge High, Glacier View Junior, Pope Elementary and Edgerton Elementary schools was lifted about 9 a.m., school district spokeswoman Karen Hansen said. The lockdown, which began about 8 a.m., was precautionary, she added.

UPDATE: Tacoma schools locked down as police investigate threat

Tacoma police are investigating a report of a middle school student seen with a gun on the way to school this morning.

The investigation has prompted a modified lockdown at several Tacoma schools, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

No injuries have been reported, and the student seen with the weapon has been detained.
