Tacoma Fire Department to honor heroes and victims of 9/11 with public ceremony

A public remembrance ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Firefighters Memorial at 3301 Ruston Way will mark the 11th anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The Tacoma Fire Department will honor the firefighters, police, emergency medical services workers and civilians who lost their lives on 9/11.

Mayor Marilyn Strickland and Tacoma Interim Fire Chief James P. Duggan will speak at the ceremony.

10 arrested at Tacoma’s annual Fourth of July celebration

Tacoma police officers made 10 arrests during Monday’s Freedom Fair festivities along the Ruston Way waterfront.

The arrests were for trespassing, assault, minor in possession of alcohol, racing, boating under the influence and resisting arrests, among others, the department reported early today.

Between 140 and 150 officers were patrolling the popular waterfront during the Freedom Fair event Monday.

Child injured after suspected drunken driver hits car along Tacoma waterfront

A suspected drunken driver crashed into another vehicle late Wednesday on Ruston Way, injuring a 5-year-old child, the Tacoma Police Department reported.

The child was injured around the eye area. The injury was not considered serious, police reported.

The crash occurred just before 11:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of Ruston Way. The suspect’s vehicle hit the other vehicle, which contained two adults and two children, police reported.

The suspect, a 29-year-old woman, was believed to be intoxicated. She was injured and taken to the hospital.
