UPDATED: Man hit and killed by Sounder train in Puyallup

A Sounder train struck and killed a man on the railroad tracks in Puyallup this morning but the crew didn’t immediately realize it, Puyallup police and Sound Transit reported.

The investigation canceled two Sounder trains from Tacoma to Seattle this morning but did not impact drivers, Puyallup police Lt. Dave McDonald said.

Investigators believe a southbound Sounder train struck the man between 6:50 and 7:10 a.m. at 18th Street Northwest and West Stewart Avenue. There is no vehicular or pedestrian crossing at that point.

UPDATED: Man found dead on railroad tracks near Sumner identified

The man found dead near where a train hit a vehicle in the Sumner area over the weekend has been identified.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Gary Stark, 55, of Pacific. An autopsy was planned today to determine how and why he died.

A grain truck struck a vehicle left on the tracks near Sumner late Saturday or early Sunday. Stark’s body was found about one-tenth of a mile away from the vehicle.

The track reopened just before 3 a.m. Sunday.
