Man rescued after climbing Point Defiance bluff to escape incoming tide

Tacoma Fire crews rescued a 30-year-old man from a bluff in Point Defiance park tonight that he climbed to escape the incoming tide, Battalion Chief Gary Steinhoff said.

The man had been walking along the beach below the Gig Harbor Viewpoint along 5 Mile Drive.

When the tide started coming in, he hiked up the steep bank, but could not make the last 8 feet, which Steinhoff said are verticle.

The beach-goer was able to contact a friend, who called for help.

Woman rescued after falling off bluff at Point Defiance Park

UPDATE, 4:52 PM: The injured woman has been lifted to safety. Patient stable, alert, communicative, according to Tacoma Fire. Woman appears to be in her 30s or 40s. She is being evaluated by paramedics.

UPDATE, 4 P.M.: Tacoma Fire says crews are securing the ropes system to bring the injured woman up. She is about 75 feet down a steep incline. A tweet from the fire department says the patient is stable.

Investigation continues into suspicious fire at Point Defiance pagoda

Tacoma police and fire investigators were continuing to look into a suspicious fire that heavily damaged the historic pagoda inside Point Defiance Park on Friday.

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the fire appeared to have been intentionally set but investigators do not yet know who started it or why.

“It looked like someone had gained entry into the building,” said Fulghum, declining to be more specific.

A Metro Parks Tacoma garbage worker discovered the blaze shortly before 4:30 a.m. Friday. Tacoma firefighters found the nearly 100-year-old building full of smoke when they arrived a short time later.

What was that? Emergency response at Point Defiance Zoo

All of those lights and sirens at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium this afternoon are in response to a staff member who fell down a flight of stairs in a work area at the zoo around 11:50 a.m.

Emergency crews on the scanner report that the woman is believed to have a broken leg.

The worker is in a spot that is hard to reach by regular means, so they will need to lift her out. According to scanner traffic, the employee is responsive.

Point Defiance sexual assault suspect arrested

Tacoma police have arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a mentally disabled man at the Point Defiance Boathouse Feb. 20.

Acting on a tip, officers spotted Jerry Albert Johnson Jr., 46, near the intersection of S. 15th Street and S. Yakima Avenue around noon Thursday and took him into custody without incident, according to Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum.

Johnson, who has been booked into the Pierce County Jail, faces a charge of second-degree rape. A bench warrant was released for his arrest on Tuesday.

The victim, a 24-year-old man fishing at the pier, was allegedly approached by Johnson.

Photo of suspect in Point Defiance sexual assault case released

Tacoma police have released a photograph of the man accused of sexually assaulting a developmentally disabled man at the Point Defiance Boathouse restroom last month.

Jerry A. Johnson, 46, was charged Tuesday with second-degree rape in connection with the Feb. 20 incident. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Johnson is 5 feet 10 and 160 pounds. He has scars on his hand and arm and a tattoo on his left arm. He’s a Level 3 sex offender who had been registered to live in Seattle, according to an online sex offender registry web site. The web

UPDATED: Hot topic of the week: Consensual rendezvous at Point Defiance Park

There’s been quite a bit of buzz this week after Lights & Sirens did a “what was that” item on police activity at Point Defiance Park.

Other TV stations have picked up the tidbit and, according to reports, the incident was the topic of conversation on at least one Seattle talk radio show. (Look for a Nose item on the affair in tomorrow’s News Tribune.)

UPDATED: Police activity at Point Defiance Park

Tacoma police officers are checking up on a tip at Point Defiance Park.

A bystander called 911 and reported seeing a naked woman tied up to a tree in the Owen Beach area, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. A man was spotted nearby.

Several police officers responded to the park. Traffic officers were posted at the entrances and exits to the park, Fulghum said.

Both parties involved in the wooded area have been contacted, Fulghum said. Officers are sorting out the details.
