Man dies in rollover crash in Tacoma at East 62nd and McKinley

A man died in a rollover crash that happened about 5 p.m. Wednesday at East 62nd Street and McKinley Avenue East, Tacoma police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

It appeared the crash may have been caused by a medical emergency, she said.

Tacoma Fire Battalion Chief Jim Zuluaga said crews used the jaws of life to remove patients from the wreck, and that three people were taken to the hospital.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner has not yet identified the man.

UPDATE: Man killed in Purdy hit-and-run identified, suspect charged

A license plate left at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run in Purdy Saturday helped lead troopers to the suspect, who pleaded not guilty Monday to failing to remain at the scene of an accident involving death.

Christopher Kovacs, 43 of Gig Harbor, was ordered held pending $25,000 bail.

Troopers said Kovacs turned left in front of 21-year-old Jacob Daniel Converse, also of Gig Harbor, who was riding a Yamaha scooter south on state Route 302 at the time and died from his injuries, court records show.

Tacoma toddler identified who police say was accidentally run over and killed by mother

A 2-year-old boy who died from injuries police say he suffered when his mother accidentally ran him over Saturday has been identified as Hazayah Ward of Tacoma by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Hazayah’s mother was backing out of her driveway near South 87th and South Alaska streets about 11:40 a.m. when she unknowingly ran over the boy, who was later pronounced dead at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, police said.

Police investigators are still working to determine the exact circumstances of the accident, spokesman Naveed Benjamin said.

Orting man killed in homicide-suicide crash identified

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified an Orting man killed in a homicide-suicide crash Monday in Graham as Steve Munson, 56.

Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies said Munson died when 19-year-old Justin Bell drove a Ford Mustang more than 100 miles per hour and crashed into the pickup truck the 56-year-old was driving about 11 p.m. near Orting Kapowsin Highway East and 200th Street East.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies said Bell, of the Graham area, left a suicide note that said the teenager was going to drive his car into a pole.

Man dead, woman injured after motorcycle-BMW crash south of Gig Harbor

A Tacoma man riding his motorcycle died Saturday after a Gig Harbor woman driving a BMW crossed the center line about 7:15 p.m. in the 2800 block of East Bay Drive Northwest and hit him head-on, according the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The 69-year-old man was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead after the crash south of Gig Harbor. He was identified by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office as Alex Heinz.

The woman, 71, was taken to the hospital for injuries, and is expected to be okay, Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Man, 42, hit and killed by train in Steilacoom

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train hit and killed a 42-year-old man just before 8 p.m. tonight in Steilacoom, according to West Pierce Fire and Rescue.

The train was going about 40-50 miles per hour, when the engineer saw a man lying on the tracks near the ferry dock by Union Avenue and Commercial Street and was not able to stop before hitting him, West Pierce assistant fire marshal Hallie McCurdy said.

West Pierce crews responded and found the man deceased.

The train tracks are closed as the Pierce County Medical Examiner investigates, McCurdy said.

Boy, 9, dies day after allegedly impaired uncle crashed car in Purdy

A 9-year-old boy died tonight after he was ejected Saturday from a car driven by his uncle.

Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital spokeswoman Marce Edwards confirmed tonight that the boy has died. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet identified him.

The crash about 1:30 a.m. Saturday happened as the driver tried to exit from westbound state Route 16 to Purdy Drive, lost control, and flipped the vehicle, according to the State Patrol.

Pedestrian hit, killed near Graham Friday identified

A man hit and killed by two vehicles near Graham Friday morning has been identified as 22-year-old Derick Cartwright, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Cartwright, of Graham, was wearing dark clothing when he was hit by the vehicles about 6:30 a.m. while walking at the intersection of 110th Avenue Court East and 200th Street East, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Friday.

Both drivers, who didn’t see Cartwright, remained at the scene, Troyer said.
