Motorcyclist who crashed on Olympia off-ramp suspected of DUI

A man who crashed his motorcycle on a freeway off-ramp in Olympia Saturday night is suspected of driving while impaired by drugs, the Washington State Patrol reported.

The single-vehicle wreck, which occurred shortly before 9 p.m. off southbound Interstate 5 at Exit 105, resulted in  non-fatal injuries, State Patrol dispatchers reported Saturday.

“An adult male was transported to a local hospital with injuries,” State Patrol spokesman Trooper Guy Gill tweeted about 9:15 p.m. Saturday.  “Our investigation reveals that the rider is DUI.”

Troopers shut down part of the off-ramp Saturday to investigate the motorcycle crash.

Man’s body found in Olympia’s West Bay Marina

The body of an unidentified man was found dead and pulled out of the water at West Bay Marina about noon Sunday, according to the Olympia Fire Department.

According to Olympia Fire Chief J.D. Young:

About 11:30 a.m. Sunday, the Olympia Fire Department responded to a report of a possible drowning at West Bay Marina. Once there, they found the body of a man in the water between two boats under a covered area of the marina, Young said. The unidentified man was fully clothed and had facial hair, he said.

Olympia-area woman shot in head when son’s gun discharges

A 49-year-old Olympia-area woman was critically injured overnight when a gun her son was handling accidentally discharged.

The bullet hit the woman in the head. She was rushed to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia and was taken into surgery, Thurston County sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin said.

Sheriff’s investigators describe the shooting as an “unintentional discharge.” The 20-year-old son was interviewed at the scene but has not been arrested.

“There is no reason to believe there was any criminal intent,” Elwin said. “He was appropriately distraught.”

Olympia police search for bank robber

Olympia police are searching for a man who robbed a West Coast Bank branch Tuesday afternoon.

The man walked into the branch at 2850 Harrison Ave. N.W. just after 3 p.m. He demanded money from a teller, then fled before officers arrived, Olympia police reported.

The robber was described as in his early 20s and 6 feet tall with a thin build. He had no facial hair.

Olympia police released a surveillance image of the suspect Tuesday evening.

Olympia duplex damaged in fire

Olympia firefighters were looking into what sparked a blaze late Monday that damaged a duplex.

Firefighters were called to the two-story building in the 400 block of Quince Street Southeast just after 10 p.m. The downstairs renters had seen smoke, alerted the upstairs renters and called 911, the Olympia Fire Department reported.

All of occupants were out by the time fire crews arrived. Firefighters found flames coming from the top floor and attacked them from the roof and inside of the building, the fire department reported.

Two jump to safety as flames rip through Olympia house

Two people jumped from an Olympia home overnight as fire ripped through the two-story building.

The residents were checked out by the Olympia Fire Department after making the 12-foot jump, the fire department reported. They were not injured.

Olympia firefighters were called to the house in the 1300 block of Lybarger Street Southeast just after 2 a.m.

The residents woke up after hearing a noise and found the fire, the fire department reported.

Fire crews kept the flames from spreading to other homes and nearby trees. They had the blaze under control by 3:35 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

Olympia house damaged in overnight fire

Fire investigators were looking into what sparked a blaze early today inside an Olympia garage.

A man called 911 about 2:50 a.m. after he discovered a fire in the garage of his home in the 500 block of 17th Avenue Southeast, the Olympia Fire Department reported. The man had been awake when he heard noises in the garage.

The two adults and two children inside the house were outside by the time firefighters arrived six minutes later.

State’s highest honor to be given to slain Lakewood, Pierce County officers today

Fourteen law enforcement officers – including six from the Lakewood Police Department and Pierce County Sheriff’s Office – will be honored today during a ceremony in Olympia.

Gov. Chris Gregoire and state Attorney General Rob McKenna will award the officers with the Medal of Honor, the state’s highest honor for law enforcement.The medal is given to officers who are killed in the line of duty, were seriously injured or displayed exceptionally meritorious conduct.
